The association SINCRESIS presents the project of Daniel Joseph Bornino, artist in residence of the winner selection in 2013, who lives in Berlin and who set up a genuine experimental laboratory to bring to the attention of the public a series of photographs in print on paper, based on a concept constant in his artistic production: exploring the boundaries of human knowledge of reality.
As he himself points out: “The distinction between real and unreal is just a matter of perception. The reality is that place that we build through observation, a simple interpretation captured by our senses, speculating with multiple opportunities to watch. As Gilles Deleuze explains in Difference and Repetition, “often confuse the virtual with the possible and the real with the current. The virtual is not opposed to the real, but the current. […] While the real is made in the image and likeness of the possible, the current, on the contrary, does not resemble the virtuality that embodies “. Above the existing reality, overlaps a projected reality, subjective.
An important factor of this trial is the narrative of the series, a non-linear narrative involving different media. The project draws references from a literary genre, the nouveau roman, theorized by Alain Robbe-Grillet, so the text puts the player as a depository of meaning, according to a model that Roland Barthes calls “text scriboso” because that invites the reader to constant re-reading and re-interpretation of the text. The goal then is to create a series of descriptive images of a situation, images full of elements and signs that describe the environment abundantly photographed, so steeped in need on the part of the viewer a great force before investigative and interpretative then to discern, isolate, the very elements of context and reintroduce them into it neatly. “
Using tricks such as reflection, the overlap, repetition and choosing always different points of view, Bornino provides all the elements available in the context to produce a subjective reality from an objective context.
“This process – says the artist – is the same one used by the human eye when viewing an object: for example, when we see a distant object the image projected on the retina will be smaller than the idea that our mind has the object itself , our brain must then reorganize it to put it in perspective. The same process is used by Grillet to tell a story; in his book “Jealousy”, for example, the French author composed and recomposed several narrative elements juxtaposing them in an attempt to get to the final solution, using gimmicks such as for example the repetition of the descriptions, the attention to the strange details, constant interruptions; a method that recalls the experience of psychoanalysis, in which the deeper meanings of the unconscious are contained in the stream of interruptions and free associations.
During his time in residence his work in progress is set on the production technique of photos in order to create the narrative through the exhibition of different media.
